The Community of Christ/RLDS Church is closely related, both historically and doctrinally, to the Mormon (LDS) church based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Community of Christ teaches that God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are one being rather than the Mormon belief that they are three separate gods. Nevertheless, the group affirms Joseph Smith as a true prophet and considers "revelations" such as the Book of Mormon to be genuine scripture. The group has a living prophet and apostles, as well as a priesthood and other leadership units that largely mirror those of the LDS church.

Some of the controversies of recent years have included issues related to the building of the group’s temple in Independence, Missouri; succession; and the ordination of women.

One of the main positions separating the Community of Christ from the Utah Mormon church is its rejection of polygamy.
